Fall is in the air, which means pumpkin spice and cool air. Along with the colored leaves, allergies and colds seem to flare up during the autumn. With the holiday season in full swing, here are a few tips from our Kerrville Imaging staff to ensure you stay healthy this fall.
1. Stay bundled.
That's right, it's time to pull those sweaters, scarves, and boots out of the closet! Not only is Fall a great time to switch up your wardrobe, but adding layers and staying warm will actually keep you healthy. Cold weather lowers your immune system because there is a lower blood supply to your extremities since your body is trying to preserve heat around the important organs like your heart and brain. Because your immune system is lowered, it is much easier to get a cold, the flu, and a sore throat. So keep your body warm to keep your immune system up! And maybe consider getting a flu shot!
2. Use those pumpkins for more than just Jack-O-Lanterns.
Pumpkins are super popular during the fall season, whether it be for carving, decorations, or pies. But the stuff you usually throw away (the pulp and seeds) is actually packed with nutrients! Pumpkin pulp is packed with Vitamin A & C and the seeds contain phytosterols, which help lower cholesterol. Check out these awesome recipes for ideas on how to make pumpkins even more delicious and useful!
3. Watch out for the scary and sneaky snacks and treats.
Tis the season for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, five-course meals, delicious Halloween candy, and celebrations with friends and family. This is definitely the easiest time of the year to gain weight, especially with all the food and baggy clothes that cover up our figures. We aren't concerned about having those summer bods anymore, we just want to hibernate or make s'mores and drink hot chocolate. In the midst of all this tempting food, make sure you're still getting a good dose of fruits and veggies, and maybe consider limiting yourself on the treats.
4. Get outside on the good weather days.
One way to help you fight the weight gain from food is to continue to exercise! On the days that aren't too cold, get outside and enjoy the weather and scenery. It's a beautiful time of year and it makes exercising outside a million times more fun. Of course, still, remember tip #1 and bundle up, but go on a walk with a friend, a dog, or just by yourself every once in a while!
5. Read on the bad weather days.
Of course, not every day in the fall is perfect outdoor weather, sometimes it's too cold or windy, so don't feel bad about staying inside. Even if you aren't exercising your body, bundling up with a book is a great way to exercise your mind! Reading is something that most of us don't have on our to-do list, but the fall season is the perfect excuse to make time for it... and of course, it's still good for our health.
We hope these tips help you stay healthy this fall season. Simply by incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can beat the common cold and avoid seasonal allergies. If you are in need of an MRI scan for any areas of concern, our Kerrville imaging staff would be more than happy to assist you.
